Holiday getaways: Survival guide to enjoy a road trip with kids

A holiday road trip is always a great idea to have fun. But you may want to think twice before planning a road trip with young kids. This is because long day traveling with kids in a car can be a bit exhausting for you. But you can manage to have a fun filled road trip with right planning. Follow my road trip survival guide to have an enjoyable holiday getaway with your family.

Do finish some pre-travel discussion

Discuss with your family members including kids about the road trip before making any plans. Thus, your young kids will feel interested about the trip. Prepare a list of questions and ask for their opinion such as:

  1. Where do they want to visit? (mountain, beaches, cities etc)
  2. What will be the tenure of the trip?
  3. When do they want to start the trip?

Do finish some pre-travel work

It is extremely important to complete pre-travel works before beginning the road trip with kids. You need to pack an emergency road trip kit. Moreover, you need to do some more work before the journey such as:

Laundry work

When you're going for more than a few days, especially with young kids, you need to pack enough clothes. Try to complete the laundry work before traveling and pack enough outfits for each one.

Pack clothes for each day

Try to lay out the outfits for each kid for every day. Pack some extra outfit for your kids to manage messy situations.

Use label on bags

If you're traveling with two or three young children, then you should be more organized. Keep individual bags for each day. As an example, lay out a set of dress including socks, underwear, pajama in a bag and attach a label to the day when the dress will be used.

DIY snacks and foods

Don't depend on gas stations for snacks. Try to make some healthy homemade snacks from home of your kids' choice. Try to carry canned cold and dry foods. Kids like to eat sandwiches in their own lunch box. So, try to allot lunch boxes for each child with healthy snacks and sandwiches.

Preparation is key to get an enjoyable road trip with kids

Carry pillows when you're on a long road trip with your kids. Try to pick some small sized pillows in order to save space in your car. You need to arrange a car seat organizer to keep color books, DVDs, crayons etc. Thus, your kids will stay busy and happy as well. If you know some basic sewing, then you can easily get a DIY car seat organizer. Take some audio books and games. These will help you pass some time in a full traffic highway.

Buy some board games to entertain yourself. You may experience snow, ice, sleet while driving. Keep de-icing sprays and washer fluids to get rid of these problems.

Conclusion

As per a study by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the back seats are safe for kids under the age 12. Middle of the back seat is best for those kids who have tendencies to feel motion sickness while traveling. Above all, don't forget to carry the box of wipes. This is very useful to wash your kids' messy hand and faces in the car. Ask your kids to use straws while drinking juice or yogurt. Thus, you can keep your car clean and your kids' hands as well. Mark Sedenquist, editor of Road Trip America suggest "Plan to stop at a neighborhood park or someplace where the kids can run and blow off steam at least once every two to three hours.""
